Session on Career Counseling: An intervention

This session was aimed at understanding their awareness about the various career options and the path to reach their desired goals. Also an attempt to expose them to non-traditional career options, using interaction and multimedia technology was made. It all began with talking about their dream career and the motivations to be that person and also if they knew the route to reaching this goal. Some students displayed discrepancy in the career choice and the educational stream chosen to follow their dream. In cases where it wasn’t too late (till 10th standard, where stream choice has not yet been made), we guided them for the right educational path, the coaching and guidance available at each stage and the set of examinations necessary to be in that profession. This activity played out well, since some students, who were initially reluctant to speak their mind, got a chance to talk about their aspirations with pride and the importance they attach to that goal.

Aligning to the need assessment done in one of the previous sessions, where many students categorically stated their want to work after 12th standard, not wanting to invest anymore time, money and effort into formal education system. Keeping this view in mind, we exposed them to ITI training and other skill India training, which are directed at quicker job transition via multimedia. 3 advertisements (webisodes) were shown, two from the Asian Paints color lab and one from Samsung Technical School to open perspectives about what all is available as a career option.  Also the theme for both these advertisements (webisode) is the protagonist hailing from humble background, making ends meet, the role of short training and ultimately pride for family and high self-esteem. The self-esteem and pride for family was highlighted by many kids while sharing their motivations for chosen career aspiration. Weaving all the essential elements together, the videos appealed to some of the students who were later interested to find out more about these options.

This exposure was essential to develop positive values towards learning and steer them towards taking additional courses or training and be committed to their choices, thus building the hope for success. The session concluded with yet another garba session with songs chosen by kids using multimedia and much fun and frolic among the them.
