  1. Really like the idea of the english songs. It is a kind of old usage of Gamification that still works !!
    Maybe you can put more emphasis on the idea of "Generating" Aspirations for these kids coming from poor background who don't have lots of success story in their close environment. For this purpose your role game might be useful.

    Let's raise the level of aspirations of the kids :)

  2. I think that the idea of an intervention focused on inter-personal and pro-social skill is fantastic!
    It's really important to let children know that respect to themselves and to others is the basic to be a good citizen.
    Can I suggest you to use role-playing games, for instance asking to boys to act like girls and viceversa? Being in the shoes of others often can be very effective, even for few minutes :)

  3. Your intervention focuses on both cognitive and non-cognitive skills, which is amazing. I also liked the detailed outline of the plan. The children need vocabulary and the general know-how in English. Now the challenge would be introduce these kids to the world of English in playful manner, instead of intimidating them. We can use theatre and story-telling to built on their existing skills and give them tools to improve upon themselves.

    1. Thank you for your valuable input, Anurag! English seems like a long-term goal with these kids. However, we have tried gamified interventions to make English seem less intimidating (as you pointed out). Apart from this, our focus has been more towards pro-social skill development.

  4. Hey Team Smita, great work!! However I had a couple of suggestions that might help your team to improvise on the action plan. Please find below the same:

    1) I suppose the goal of 'Listening to English language' falls under the superordinate goal of 'Vocabulary building and Spelling' because listening to the songs is ultimately going to serve your purpose of improving their vocabulary. So, even though a great intervention is in place I feel the goals could be clubbed. Also your team could give them a friendly and non threatening dictation test so that you could get some concrete measure to assess their improvement.

    2) The goal to 'instil self-confidence and confidence for public speaking' could also be achieved by putting them in simulated situations, situations wherein which they may actually have to face an audience in their own personal lives. I guess, this would better prepare them to cater to the situation when they actually encounter them.

      In our previous session, we incorporated the public speaking element by asking them to present their motivations for a particular career choice.

      Also, we felt that 'listening to English language' incorporates aspects such as the flow, rhythm, and pronunciation, thereby differentiating it from mere vocabulary building.

    It is a detailed plan with both short and long term goals. It'd help if you could share the changes along the parameters you have outlined (behavior observation; instances of volunteering; vocabulary improvement etc.) and how are you using the gamification elements to for these interventions and monitoring.

  6. Suggestions regarding interventions planned

    1.

    Comparison between pre & post career aspirations:

    I feel that the time might be too short to observe a visible change in career aspirations of children. Yet, awareness in terms of the number of career options they know, and the qualifications that lead to it may be checked. A more concrete idea could be to compare their pre- and post-understanding of the pre-career choice they mentioned instead of any change in their career choices.

    Not everyone may be excited by all career choices that you explain, but as a group, they may get excited about at least some choices besides the traditional ones. Hence, their understanding about the career choices can be checked as a group, and there could be individual and collective points for each correct answer.

    2.

    To further refine the idea, for their current career aspirations, you can help them map their performance and see the gaps (math, language etc.). Consequently, specific suggestions to help them overcome these gaps could be provided. A plan to reduce this gap could be chalked out and possibly gamified. (though I understand that you will not have this much time).

    3.

    To instill self-confidence and confidence for public speaking:

    This exercise can be in Gujarati, where they are asked to form their thoughts on a theme (something they did in last one month or plan to do in next vacation; Something that scared them or excited them etc.) and asked to describe it. The idea of public speaking is to enhance expression, and mother tongue may be a better choice.

    Behavior & interaction patterns:

    If you have been able to identify certain concerns, you could keep a daily behavior or interaction tracker which students could self-monitor. (is it too late to implement this idea?)

  7. Thank you Deepak for your immensely valuable suggestions and guidance.

    We incorporated your input regarding the career related session. The session began with an attempt to gauge their current understanding of personal career goals, their motivations for those career choices, and also the path to reach those goals. We tried filling the gaps, wherever needed. As per your suggestion, we will be doing a post assessment in the next session.

    Next, we also exposed them to non-traditional career options, using multimedia technology. These alternative choices didn't appeal to all, but definitely intrigued some, who later approached us for further information.

    Also, we feel that the other concerns, though valid, are very difficult to implement in such a limited time frame and with a non-Gujarati speaking team!

    Great job with the interventions. The interventions that you have suggested all seem easily applicable and can be continued by the SMILE instructors even after the course ends, Kudos to that. However I just have a feeling from what I read from your proposal that it lacks elements of gamification. Please correct me if I am wrong.

  9. Your intervention is important and highly relevant. Although you may not have been able to incorporate many elements of gamification due to time/availability constraints, sharing of your knowledge & experiences is important. Do discuss mechanisms for deepening student engagement with your intervention in your final blog & presentation. Also, some directions for future work would be helpful for the team working with your students in the next term. We can explore the possibilities of extending this intervention by the new batch of GTLM students.
